“Kmart came along, and they wanted me to be a lifestyle expert for them. They wanted me to be an influencer. They didn’t know that word, but I knew that I could really influence a huge [audience],” explained Stewart.
At the time, Kmart was the biggest retailer there was that sold everything from housewares, electronics, entertainment, hardware, food, and clothing. Stewart adds that they signed a “fabulous” deal with a “huge royalty” that allowed her to get a percentage from each sale of a product she designed.
Kmart was responsible for the product advertising, with Stewart revealing that they had an original budget of $20 million for the first year. They had no idea how much they would actually sell, and Stewart said they “sold hundreds of millions of dollars of product” within the first year. Kmart ultimately “took a chance,” and it paid off.

“Kmart was my first big money and it was a lot of money. I was clearing $65 million a year in royalties,” revealed Stewart.
“We were selling close to $2 billion worth of merchandise. That’s a lot of money. That was funding the whole development of my magazine, the whole business. That was an amazing thing.”
The lifestyle mogul and Kmart ended their partnership in 2009, with Stewart admitting it became harder to get royalties due to her legal issues. She “lost about a billion dollars” when she started to make headlines in 2004 after it was revealed that she was involved in an insider-trading scandal. After a six-week trial, Stewart was found guilty of conspiracy, obstruction, and two counts of lying to federal investigators.
One of the industry’s biggest names spent five months in prison and was given five months of home confinement and two years of supervised probation after she was released. Part of the decline in royalties and the dissolution of the partnership also came from Kmart filing for bankruptcy and the closure of around 600 stores by 2004.
