The University and the SGA are hosting “Battle of the Ballots,” a competition against the University of Georgia during Voting Matters Week aimed at registering the most students to vote.
The week will kick off with the Public Officials Q&A Panel on Monday from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom. The panel includes Judge Rob Robertson, Board of Registrars chairwoman Pam Rogers and Tuscaloosa City Clerk Brandy Johnson and will focus on topics such as voting, elections and the election process.
“I decided to be part of the panel because I think students should have the opportunity to hear directly from people who work in government and understand how the process actually works,” Johnson said. “I enjoy talking with students about government because it’s important for them to understand that “government” isn’t something that happens somewhere far away — it’s happening in their own communities every day.”
Westley Booth, a freshman majoring in political science, mentioned concerns about student attitudes toward midterm elections.
“The biggest thing right now is that people just don’t think that it affects them,” Booth said. “I feel like if we get more people involved, then it’ll have an effect.”
Johnson said he agreed that student involvement in elections is important.
“Students have perspectives and priorities that deserve to be part of those conversations, and participating in elections is an important part of making sure those perspectives are represented,” Johnson said.
Another event during Voting Matters Week is the Civic Carnival on Tuesday from 4 to 6 p.m. on the Student Center Lawn. There will be voter registration and civic engagement activities as well as food trucks, games and trivia with prizes.
“I want students to understand that civic engagement is bigger than simply showing up to vote every few years,” Johnson said. “Attend a meeting (not just for class credit). Ask a question or two. Talk to an elected official (they really are just people like you and I). Pay attention to what’s happening in your community. Government works best when people are informed, engaged, and willing to participate.”
Booth listed issues that he thinks will affect students and encourage them to vote.
“One issue is our economy, as of right now, with the cost of living going up and the cost of education and housing,” Booth said. “Everything is getting more expensive, so I think getting people to learn more about that and the reason for it could spark them to learn more about what’s going on.”
Tabling events such as Puppies and Polls and Game Day Pins will also be taking place on Wednesday and Friday of this week.
