Subscriptions create hidden stressors for students ...Middle East

News by : (The Crimson White) -

College life can come with lots of financial stress, and an overlooked part of that can be paying for subscriptions.

As students leave home and services like Netflix and HBO Max crack down on account sharing, many students might find themselves starting to pay for their own subscriptions for the first time. Starting a subscription as a student can come with certain benefits, like free trials and student-specific deals, but it can also be stressful.

Thomas Miller, a sophomore studying computer science, mathematics and neuroscience, said he is paying for an Apple storage subscription, Spotify Premium and Amazon Prime.

“It’s a weird stressor. It’s one of those things in life that’s not a big deal but stresses you out more than it should,” Miller said. “The subscriptions themselves aren’t that much money, but they sneak up on you because you’re not consciously paying for them. I think I have this much money, then a few weeks go by without me spending anything, and my subscriptions renew and there goes $40.”

Some students said having family and friends willing to share subscriptions can be helpful for reducing this stress. Adeline Dobereiner, a senior studying Spanish and graphic design, said her roommate has a lot of subscriptions on their shared TV.

“I’ll probably need to start getting my own subscriptions when I live on my own,” Dobereiner said. “I’m low-maintenance, though, and there’s not a ton that I actually need.”

Certain services also offer special deals for university students, including discounts and free trials. Vedanta Somnathe, a junior studying computer science and mathematics, said he is paying for several subscriptions for services including Codex, Claude, DoorDash and Uber Eats.

“Doordash gave me a free year for being a student — Uber Eats too, I think. Some of the tech subscriptions also gave me six months free,” Somnathe said. “A lot of these were free plans when I started them, but eventually got so valuable that I decided to start paying for them.”

Miller said he thinks some of these student subscriptions offer more than people need and make it seem extra valuable by labeling it as a student discount.

“Spotify I would probably pay for, even without the student deal, but some things like Doordash Premium advertise their student deal a lot,” Miller said. “I tried their free trial, and after a month I was considering keeping it. It kind of lures you in like that.”

Miller said the fact that he is on scholarship means that he doesn’t have to worry too much about subscriptions, but it might be worse for others.

“If you’re having to work just to stay on campus, I imagine subscriptions are a lot more stressful.”
