Kid Rock is officially entering his Jesus era, but the internet isn’t exactly feeling the love.
The rocker released his new Christian single, “James 1:17 (Jesus Is King),” on October 1, kicking off a new faith-centered chapter ahead of his upcoming album Halfway 2 Jesus. The 17-track album is scheduled for October 17 and will feature fellow Michigander, Eminem, on “7 Sins.”
But before the new song could even settle in, the music video for “James 1:17” had social media users talking about something else entirely.
In a video promoting “James 1:17,” Rock recited lyrics about his past, his faith, and finding something more meaningful than money.
“I have wandered through the ages and flipped through all your pages,” he says. “Every stage of life I’ve run through, I refuse to compromise. I’ve been locked up in your cages, and my sins became contagious. But when I got right with Jesus Christ, I found things that money can’t buy.”
Rock previously explained that the song came to him after he woke up around 2 a.m. and wrote it in roughly 30 minutes. The title comes from James 1:17, the New Testament verse about every good and perfect gift coming from above.
The accompanying music video has an especially personal connection for Rock. He dedicated the video to longtime keyboard player Jimmie Bones, who was diagnosed with ALS in 2024, as well as fan Kalvin Lynch, who has an inoperable brain tumor and whose Make-A-Wish was to play drums with Rock. The video also features Pakistani children connected to the nonprofit Miraculous Love Kids.

“Kid Rock bottom,” one X user wrote.
Others mocked Rock’s appearance and voice, with comments ranging from jokes about him being “Kid Jelly” to unsubstantiated accusations that he was under the influence of drugs. Another commenter dismissed the entire project as “grifting 101,” while someone else simply wrote, “What happened to him? Yikes.”
Threads users joined in, too, with reactions including “Drugs,” “Toothless Rock,” and a comment from one person who said they couldn’t believe they had attended one of his concerts years ago. Another person simply wondered, “Is this a joke?”
Meanwhile, fans on Rock’s Instagram offered plenty of praise, with commenters sharing positive remarks and support for his new music.
