1977 Iconic Ballad, Covered 16 Years Later by Billy Dean, Became a Generational Soft Rock Hit ...Saudi Arabia

Dave Mason’s 1977 hit “We Just Disagree” became one of the era’s most recognizable breakup songs, capturing listeners’ attention and later inspiring fellow musician Billy Dean to introduce the classic to a new generation.

The singer-songwriter and Traffic co-founder achieved massive success with the song, which became his biggest solo hit.

“We Just Disagree” debuted at No. 80 on the Billboard Hot 100 and eventually peaked at No. 12. It also reached No. 19 on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart.

Featured on his platinum-certified sixth studio solo album, Let It Flow, the song was written by guitarist Jim Krueger, who became Mason’s musical partner.

It was released as the second single after the lead track “So High (Rock Me Baby And Roll Me Away)” debuted and peaked at No. 89.

“We Just Disagree” explores the story of a couple who have grown apart and decide to go their separate ways after their relationship falls apart.

However, despite the song touching on the end of a marriage, its meaning extends beyond romantic relationships.

Mason also connected it to conflicts with his former bandmates, record labels and love interests.

“I did it because I thought it was a great song,” he told Songfacts, adding, “An unusual chord arrangement behind it. And it stood up – it was a song that when he sang it to me, it was like, ‘Yeah, that’s the song.’ Just him and a guitar, which is usually how I judge whether I’m going to do something. If it holds up like that I’ll put the rest of the icing on it. I was going to cut it anyway, but I frankly thought it was too good a song to be a hit. Sounds strange. And it wasn’t a huge hit; it got to #12. But it’s been around. It’s a great song. It’s a timeless song.”

Decades later, “We Just Disagree” found a new audience when Billy Dean recorded a country-infused cover of the iconic soft rock ballad for his third album, Fire in the Dark.

Serving as the second single from the record, the 1993 cover peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart.
