Racing in the final of the women’s 50m freestyle tonight, Olympic multi-medalist Siobhan Haughey fired off a new lifetime best, Singaporean and Asian Record en route to placing runner-up in the event.
It was European Championships gold medalist Kasia Wasick who got it done for gold, registering a mark of 23.40; however, former University of Michigan Wolverine Haughey was only .08 behind, hitting 23.48 as the silver medalist.
Taylor Ruck of Canada rounded out the podium in a result of 23.75.
Entering this competition, Haughey’s lifetime best and Asian Record stood at the 23.75 she produced five years ago on the International Swimming League (ISL) circuit. That means she hacked .27 off that prior outing to snag the silver tonight. Haughey is now the 18th-fastest woman of all time.
Haughey is coming off a successful Asian Games where the 28-year-old captured golds in the 100m and 200m freestyles and silver in the 50m freestyle.
She is a four-time Olympic medalist, having reaped silver in both the 100m and 200m freestyles at the 2020 Games in Tokyo, followed by bronze in the same events at the next edition in Paris 2024.
