This year it made the Hot 100.
The 1978 classic re-enters Billboard’s chart at No. 45 on the list dated Oct. 3, according to new chart data. Its last appearance was 47 years ago, at No. 83 on the chart dated March 10, 1979.

The Numbers Behind the Comeback
In the tracking week of Sept. 18 to 24, “September” drew 6 million official U.S. streams, up 51 percent from the week before. Sales jumped 236 percent. Its radio audience more than doubled, to 3.3 million.
It peaked at No. 8 the first time around and spent 17 weeks on the chart. This is week 18.
It had already won the month once. On Sept. 1, Billboard’s staff ranked it the best September song ever.
The Band’s First Hot 100 Hit Since 1993
Earth, Wind & Fire hadn’t been on the Hot 100 at all since “Sunday Morning” in 1993. The band has 33 Hot 100 hits, seven top 10s and one No. 1, “Shining Star,” in 1975.
The rest of the catalog came along for the ride. “Let’s Groove,” a No. 3 hit, rose 13 percent to 2.6 million streams, and the band’s 1998 Greatest Hits album jumped 40 percent to 13,000 equivalent album units.

It Debuted on a Greatest-Hits Album
“September” first came out on a 1978 greatest-hits album, The Best of Earth, Wind & Fire, Vol. 1. Questlove has called it “just a throwaway song on a greatest hits record.”
Co-writer Allee Willis walked into the studio just as the band finished writing the intro. She thought it was “obviously the happiest-sounding song in the world,” she said in 2014.
As for that date, Willis and bandleader Maurice White tried them all. There was “no significance beyond it just sang better than any of the other dates,” she said.
