I love that the Chicago Bears have a petty head coach.
Ben Johnson is wired differently, and it showed big time during and after the Bears’ 27-7 win against the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football.
We can begin with this clip from Johnson’s post-game press conference, which got an audible laugh out of me:

REPORTER: “So, how do you go into preparation when dealing with a quarterback who maybe stays in the pocket more, but gets the ball out quick, as opposed to Caleb, who may be a bit more mobile.”
BEN JOHNSON: “Well, I’ve got a little history with that, of calling plays for someone not so mobile. Now, I don’t have a history with someone that’s not a No. 1 pick, though. So, that was apparently a big deal.”

It sure sounds like the Bears’ head coach heard the haters and critics in the days leading up to MNF. Do we think Johnson has a burner? Is there someone on staff whose job is to gather receipts? If so, how does one get that gig?

These quotes, from a post we shared in last Tuesday’s Bullets from The Athletic’s Mike Sando and his correspondence with some anonymous NFL execs, stuck with me:
“The Bears are entering into this world where it’s like Ben Johnson is constantly out over his skis and they have come through,” an exec from another team said. “Well, now, guess what? They got smacked in the face and scored three points. What does that mean?”
“Ben’s schtick is what it is, and it works for him,” this second exec said. “He wanted 60 points last week. He wants 38 a game (for the season). I’d be much more concerned if they had three points in a dome.”
It was probably an overreaction to take too much away from a game played in crummy weather conditions against an otherworldly defensive play-calling effort from Vikings Defensive Coordinator Brian Flores. Unsurprisingly, Johnson’s critics weren’t easing up after that Minnesota game. Whoopsiedoodle.

To add another twist, it was pointed out that Johnson had never called plays for a quarterback who wasn’t the No. 1 overall pick. The insinuation there (from some) was that Johnson was riding the coattails of talented quarterbacks. Before the game, I was curious to see how Johnson would handle it. After the game, I was impressed with what Johnson did, in part because you could tell that the pre-game chatter activated his petty bone.

If you’ll recall, Johnson had Wright line up at left tackle on the game-winning touchdown that knocked the Green Bay Packers out of the playoffs last January. The 2025 team ranked sixth in total offense, third in rushing, 10th in passing, and ninth in points scored. One year later, Johnson is whipping up a game plan and drops 27 points on a Vic Fangio-coached defense with a third-string quarterback who accounted for three total touchdowns. Not bad for a guy who hadn’t started a game since 2023. That said, I wonder what Johnson will cook up for the encore.
