The Red Sox announced their roster for the Wild Card round and it includes left-hander Garrett Crochet. He has been officially reinstated from the 60-day injured list. Right-hander Justin Slaten has been transferred onto the 60-day IL to open a 40-man spot for Crochet. The roster does not include outfielder Braiden Ward.
Crochet has been in the injury wilderness for most of the year. Left shoulder inflammation put him on the IL in April. It was initially thought that he would have a quick absence but he suffered a lat strain in June. As time went on and he struggled to make progress, it became less and less likely that he would return to the rotation, so Crochet targeted a relief role. He didn’t make it off the IL during the regular season but has been throwing bullpens and live batting practice. It seems he has made enough progress that the Sox will give him a spot for their series against the Yankees.
It’s a role that Crochet has experience with. Though he was a starter throughout 2024 and 2025, he worked in relief for the White Sox before that. In 2020, just a few months after being drafted, Chicago called him up and added him to the bullpen. He tossed six scoreless innings late in that season and then made an appearance in that year’s postseason as well. In 2021, he stayed in the bullpen, giving the White Sox 54 1/3 innings with a 2.82 ERA. Injuries wiped out most of his 2022 and 2023 and then he returned to a starting role after that.
This year, it’s anyone’s guess what Crochet can provide after such a long injury layoff, but it’s an understandable gambit for the Sox to take. Crochet is one of the best pitchers in the league when he is healthy and at his best. He struck out 28.3% of batters faced in that 2021 season in the Chicago bullpen. That strikeout rate was over 30% when working as a starter in 2024 and 2025.
What’s unclear is what role Crochet will have now that he is active. Boston has a good bullpen, with Aroldis Chapman and Garrett Whitlock really strong options for the late innings. Perhaps they will have Crochet further down the chart, maybe for less critical situations, until he proves himself ready. Or perhaps the series will be tight enough that he has to jump right into a key leverage spot.
In addition to Chapman and Crochet, the Sox will have lefties Jake Bennett, Erik Miller and Alec Gamboa on the roster. The Yankees have a number of lefty bats on their roster, including Ben Rice, Cody Bellinger, Luis García Jr., Spencer Jones, Jazz Chisholm Jr., Austin Wells, Ryan McMahon and Trent Grisham. The Sox are starting lefties Payton Tolle and Ranger Suarez in game one and game three, respectively, with righty Sonny Gray in game two.
The rest of the Boston bullpen includes Greg Weissert, Brayan Bello and Wyatt Olds. On the position player side, they have catchers Adley Rutschman and Connor Wong, infielders Willson Contreras, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Caleb Durbin, Trevor Story, Nick Sogard and Andruw Monasterio, as well as outfielders Ceddanne Rafaela, Jarren Duran, Roman Anthony, Jahmai Jones, Wilyer Abreu and Nate Eaton.
It was reported a couple of weeks ago that the Sox were considering adding Braiden Ward to the roster. He has no major league experience but stole 61 bases in the minors this year and could have been a very specific bench weapon, coming in for a pinch-running situation. It seems the Sox have decided not to use a roster spot for Ward, at least for now.
Slaten hit the 15-day IL in August due to elbow inflammation. He tried throwing again in September but his symptoms returned. Manager Chad Tracy said earlier this month that the Sox expect him to miss the remainder of the season, so this move doesn’t come as a surprise. He’ll technically be eligible for reinstatement from the IL in mid-October.
