High school junior Claire Burns from Simpsonville, South Carolina, has announced her verbal commitment to the University of Alabama for 2028-29. She shared with SwimSwam:

Burns attends J.L. Mann High School in Greenville. She swims year-round with Y-Spartaquatics Swim Club and specializes mainly in IM, fly, and breast. As a sophomore last fall at the South Carolina High School 5A Division 1 Championships, she won the 200 IM (2:03.55) and was runner-up in the 100 breast (1:03.42). She also contributed the breast leg (29.52) to the 3rd-place 200 medley relay and the anchor (52.71) to the 3rd-place 400 free relay.
At South Carolina Swimming’s Senior Short Course Championships, Burns won the 400 IM, was runner-up in the 100 breast, 200 breast, 100 IM, and 200 IM, and came in 4th in the 100 fly. She notched PBs in the 100 fly (56.74) and 100 IM (56.97). At the YSSC March Madness meet, she updated her times in off events, like the 500 free (5:06.56), 100 back (58.75), and 200 fly (2:04.83). She concluded the season at YMCA Short Course National Championships, where she won the 200 IM, was runner-up in the 400 IM, and placed 4th and 6th in the 200 breast and 100 breast, respectively. She lowered her PBs in the 100 breast (1:02.64), 200 breast (2:13.62), 200 IM (2:01.27), and 400 IM (4:16.96).
Burns will join the Alabama class of 2032 with sprinter Paige Kowal, who, in addition to being a very fast freestyler, has similar IM times to Burns (2:01.91/4:17.13) and will make an excellent training partner.

200 breast – 2:13.62 100 breast – 1:02.64 400 IM – 4:16.96 200 IM – 2:01.27Burns’ best time 400 IM time would have made the ‘C’ final at the 2026 SEC Championships, and she would have been close to scoring in her other events, as well (it took 2:00.73 to get a second swim in the 200 IM and 1:01.35/2:12.62 to score in breast).
