The first time Bruce Campbell made a movie for a studio, that isn’t how it went.
“The first studio film I ever did, I got kicked out of the lead,” he said in a new interview. “The movie was re-edited, retitled and never came out. So, the taste in my mouth from studios is very sour.”

He doesn’t name it, and by his own account there isn’t much left to name, seeing as it was re-edited, retitled, shelved.
What he does say is what he decided. “It was time to be unbridled in my life.”
Only One Other Film Came Out Clean
“The very first movie we did, Evil Dead, was the only other movie I’ve ever done free and clear of the studio system,” he said. “So, I liked the taste of it early on.”
That was 1981. By his own count, nothing in between was free of them.
His wife eventually got tired of hearing about it. “I wanted to do something like this for a long time, and my wife finally said, ‘Quit talking about it. Let’s do it. Let’s pull the trigger. Let’s make this movie.'”
So the Two of Them Made One
He wrote Ernie & Emma, directed it, produced it and stars in it. His wife, Ida Gearon, produced it alongside him.
He plays a small-town pear salesman whose wife dies and leaves behind a detailed list of instructions for scattering her ashes. The trip runs through Pear Valley, Oregon. They shot all of it in southern Oregon, where they live. That was her idea too.
“She goes, ‘Bruce, we should shoot in Oregon. You should sleep in your own bed. You should [be having lunch] at the house.'”
They Didn’t Argue Once
“Best part of working with my wife was that, for once, we didn’t argue,” he said. “We argue a lot and when we made the movie we never argued once because we had a singular goal, singular vision.”
“Boy, my wife, she is rock solid. She’s a good human being from A to Z. I trust her.”
Campbell Has an Incurable Cancer
He announced it in March. On a podcast this month he said doctors have given him about five years.
He’s taking Ernie & Emma around the country on a screening tour of Alamo Drafthouse theaters, after independent runs that sold out.
