David Cassidy was one of the biggest teen idols of the early 1970s, but there was a side to him that fans never got to see.
In a September 2026 appearance on the Naked Lunch podcast, the late singer’s brother, Shaun Cassidy, shared a story that captured David’s funny, quirky side.
“He was funny different,” Shaun said of his brother, who starred in the ABC musical sitcom The Partridge Family from 1970 to 1974. “He was very funny. But he was funny neurotic. He was very neurotic.”
Shaun went on to detail a road trip to Disney World he organized with his brothers David, Patrick and Ryan several years before David’s death in 2017.
“I mean, we’re all adults now and we haven’t really done that since we were kids. If we ever did that all together as kids, I don’t know,” Shaun continued. “Finally, they all agree.”
“David does not travel well,” Shaun continued. “I have a little bit of trauma from back in the day, like you having hair ripped out at Disneyland and all that. He still has major trauma about it. So, he’s in the hat and the glasses in the car with us. Like David, we’re driving by like a pancake house. No one is going to know you are in the car. The neurosis of him though, used to make us laugh so much.”

He added, “[David] was going through the end of his marriage at the time and he said that it had been his wedding anniversary, and he had taken his wife Sue [Shifrin] who I adore and I love … He said it was his wedding anniversary. I said, ‘What’d you do?’ He said, ‘Well, we went out to dinner,’ and I said, ‘Where’d you go?’ He said, ‘I took her to the Sinking Ship [a nautical-themed basement bar in Tiki-Ko restaurant]. He was like that though.”
Shaun recalled that David also smoked cigars in the car while they were on the road, and when he caught two of his brothers physically fighting, he walked in wearing a bathrobe and smoking his cigar and just looked over at them and walked away.
“Nothing, no intermediary,” Shaun cracked.
“I can’t explain it, but he was just funny,” he added. “It was his take on everything was funny. And he was perverse.”

While millions of fans adored him, David Cassidy struggled with his Partridge Family fame.
Shaun previously spoke about his brother, telling The Los Angeles Times in 2025 that David“didn’t handle fame well.”
“He complained a lot in the press,” Shaun said. “He had a chip on his shoulder because he wasn’t Eric Clapton or Jimi Hendrix or somebody that he revered. It’s like, OK, play as well as Hendrix, and maybe you’ll be Hendrix. But you’re a really charming guy on a big hit television show, and 8 billion people are in love with you. Tell me why this is a bad deal?”
