September 25, 2026 Wilmington, North Carolina SCY (25 Yards) Full Meet Results Team Scores Women: #24 South Carolina 250 — UNCW 50 Men: South Carolina 165 — UNCW 135In their opening meet of the 2026-27 swim season, the South Carolina Gamecocks took down UNC-Wilmington, a top mid-major program.
The South Carolina women dominated the meet, winning 250-50, winning every single event of the meet, while the men came out 30 points ahead of UNCW.
Women’s Recap
The South Carolina women had a phenomenal season last year, and they graduated a few of their top swimmers including Amy Riordan. Despite that, they did very well in their meet against UNCW to open the new season, winning every single event.
They opened the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay. Their team of Tori Abruzzo (25.85), Elizabeth Goodwin-Birnie (28.39), Taylor Grimley (23.98), and Kara West (22.33) swam 1:40.55 to finish a little more than a second-and-a-half ahead of their ‘B’ team of Caroline Chasser (26.75), Alexis Dalton (28.36), Samantha Chan (24.16), and Kate Murray (22.73). Freshman Farrah Klein led off the South Carolina ‘C’ relay in 25.74, the fastest backstroke split in the field.
Abruzzo went on to win the 100 backstroke, stopping the clock in 54.78 to finish just a tenth ahead of South Carolina freshman Farrah Klein‘s 54.86. This was a new personal best for Klein, taking three tenths off the 55.11 mark she set at the NCSA Championships in March.
The two athletes swapped finishes in the 200 backstroke, with Klein swimming 1:58.20 for the win, a little more than a second off the 1:56.99 she swam in March of 2025. Abruzzo touched in 1:58.35, off her best of 1:55.31 from March of 2024.
There were a few swimmers who swept their individual events. Junior Emma Reiser won the 500 free and 1000 free. In the 1000, she swam 9:54.95, and in the 500, she swam 4:52.13.
Delaney Franklin, a senior this year, won three individual events. In the 200 fly, she swam 2:00.23 to finish just six tenths ahead of teammate Kaitlyn Kolessar. She swam the 200 breast in 2:12.20, more than two seconds ahead of teammate Molly Yacoviello‘s 2:14.81.
Franklin also won the 200 IM, swimming 2:00.30, to again finish ahead of Yacoviello, who swam 2:01.58 for 2nd.
In the women’s 200 freestyle relay, South Carolina swam the top time of 1:33.03 with their team of Sofia Luper (23.39), Lily Robertson (23.06), Alexis Dalton (23.47), and Ellery Ottem (23.11).
South Carolina also graduated their top diver in Sophie Verzyl, the NCAA Champion in the 3-meter and the NCAA runner-up in the 1-meter. They still picked up wins in both diving events with Reagan Patterson scoring 296.48 on the 1-meter and Kyleigh Kidd scoring 267.30 on the 3-meter.
Other Individual Event Winners
Women’s 200 Free: Ellery Ottem (SCAR) — 1:47.70 Women’s 100 Breast: Alexis Dalton (SCAR) — 1:02.44 Women’s 50 Free: Kate Murray (SCAR) — 23.34 Women’s 100 Free: Sofia Luper (SCAR) — 50.26 Women’s 100 Fly: Samantha Chan (SCAR) — 53.76The UNCW women had a few top three finishes. Maeren McGonigal swam 1:50.48 to take 3rd in the women’s 200 freestyle, only a second off her lifetime best of 1:49.43. She also finished 3rd in the 200 backstroke, stopping the clock in 1:58.66, almost three seconds off her lifetime best of 1:55.97.
McGonigal wrapped up her meet with another 3rd place finish in the 200 IM, swimming 2:02.01 to come in behind Franklin and Yacoviello.
Phoenix Rose also picked up a 3rd place finish in the 100 fly, swimming 55.09 to come in half-a-second behind South Carolina’s Taylor Grimley, who finished 2nd.
Men’s Recap
The South Carolina men won eight individual swimming events, but they did not take the top time in either relay. They also won both diving events.
Their first event winner of the meet was senior Connor Fry, who swam 9:05.98 in the 1000 freestyle to touch a second-and-a-half ahead of teammate Pierre Largeron‘s 9:07.45 in 2nd. The two men swapped in the 500 free with Largeron swimming 4:22.34 for the win by five seconds over Fry’s 4:27.08.
Largeron also won the 200 free in 1:36.53, finishing three seconds ahead of UNCW freshman Gavin Buckley, who stopped the clock in 1:39.69.
Sophomore Einar Margeir Agustsson won both breaststroke events for the Gamecocks. In the 100 breast, he swam 54.05 to finish nearly two seconds ahead of teammate Grayson Nye, and in the 200 breast, he swam 1:58.93 to finish five seconds ahead of Nye’s 2:03.74.
The men’s 200 fly went to sophomore Tyler Bardak in 1:47.61, just four tenths ahead of UNCW’s Andy Commins, who swam 1:48.07.
The 100 free went to junior Emil Jose Perez in 45.68, bringing him in two tenths faster than UNCW’s Will Spencer, who swam 45.84.
Their final swimming event winner was Sammy Empey, who swam 49.15 to set the top 100 fly time, nine hundredths ahead of teammate Ryan Hufford‘s 49.24.
UNCW took both relay wins. In the 200 medley relay, their team of Kris Lawson (22.69), William Carrico (23.94), Simon Russell (21.13), and Hil Lindsay (19.88) swam 1:27.64 to take down South Carolina’s team of Ryan Hufford (22.28), Einar Agustsson (24.51), Sammy Empey (21.20), and Noah Schotz (20.26), who swam 1:28.25.
They also won the 200 free relay with Hil Lindsay (20.53), Kris Lawson (19.50), Will Mohorney (20.64), and Joseph Busic (20.31) swimming 1:20.98.
They took down the South Carolina team of Agustsson (21.04), Largeron (20.02), Sam Brown (20.84), and Anthony Whittall (20.30), who swam 1:22.20.
William Carrico won both backstroke events for the Seahawks, swimming 48.14 in the 100 back and 1:45.81 in the 200 back. He also won the 200 IM in 1:42.44.
Their other individual event winner was Kris Lawson, who swam 20.26 to win the 50 freestyle.
Both diving events went to South Carolina’s Max Spencer, who scored 324.53 on the 1-meter and 380.03 on the 3-meter.

South Carolina will be back in action on October 16th and 17th at the Georgia Tech Dual Meet Tournament.
UNCW’s next meet will be on October 10th against the University of Virginia.
