MCDONALD — It was one touchdown after another, during a one-sided affair in McDonald, on Friday night.
The Blue Devils hosted Jackson-Milton, and McDonald remained undefeated by clobbering the Blue Jays 37-7.
It was the 16th consecutive regular season victory for McDonald, as the Blue Devils moved to 6-0 this season.
McDonald received the opening kickoff, and after a long return, Quinn Schmidt scored a touchdown.
The Blue Jays fumbled the ball back to McDonald, and 1:20 into the game the Blue Devils had already set off fireworks two times and were ahead 13-0.
“We came out early, and executed on a high level,” McDonald coach Dan Williams said. “It was in all three phases. We did what we needed to do. The kids played hard.”
Senior Caleb Gallner picked off a pass. Then Josh Krumpak had a big run, and he followed it up with a 20-yard touchdown catch to make the score 19-0.
McDonald forced a punt, and three plays later, Krumpak was in the end zone again with a 3-yard TD run to make it 25-0 at the end of the first quarter.
The Blue Jays tried to pick up a first down to begin the second quarter. However, on 4th-and-3, Gallner intercepted another pass and took it to the house for the score to make it 31-0.
McDonald forced another punt, and freshman Joey Krumpak wasn’t going to return it. Krumpak watched the ball roll to the 3-yard line before he decided to pick it up and fly around the field 97 yards for a touchdown.
McDonald led 37-0 at halftime.
“Special teams had a punt return touchdown, we had a pick-six defensively, we were able to run and throw on offense. We had a good first half,” Williams said.
The only thing that didn’t go the Blue Devils’ way was in the kicking game. McDonald failed on five extra-point attempts.
“Our kicking game has been up and down this season,” Williams said. “Our kicker was out sick for a few weeks. We’re just trying to get him back and healthy. He’s got to get back in rhythm, and in the swing of things. We’re still going to run him out there every time. He’s a good kicker, and he’s going to learn from it.”
It was a running-clock, in the second half, with McDonald ahead by more than 30 points. The Blue Jays (0-6) finally got on the scoreboard before the final buzzer sounded after a 25-yard pass from junior quarterback Lane Taylor to senior JJ Fishel. Taylor ran it in from 5 yards out to avoid the shutout.
