A suburban teacher and middle school girls’ basketball coach has been arrested and charged with possessing child sex abuse material, police announced Thursday.
John Anderlik, 27, has been charged with multiple counts of possessing and disseminating or offering to disseminate child sex abuse material involving victims under the age of 18, the Crystal Lake Police Department said.
The charges came after the department said allegations “came to the attention of the Crystal Lake Police Department through the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force,” sparking an “immediate investigation” and search warrant on Anderlik’s home.
In an alert to families, District 118 said Anderlik was a sixth-grade teacher and girls’ basketball coach at Matthews Middle School, calling Anderlik’s arrest “difficult and concerning news.”
The district’s interim co-superintendents said Anderlik remained in police custody Thursday and has been placed on administrative leave, making him prohibited from contacting any students or entering any district property.
“The safety, well-being, and protection of our students is always our highest priority,” the district said in its letter, adding that on-site counseling and support resources would be available for students.
Anderlik has been known to publish school-related content on social media platforms, with some videos generating hundreds of thousands of views.
Crystal Lake police asked anyone who may have information on Anderlik’s actions to contact the police department at (815)-356-3620 or to submit an anonymous tip by texting CLPDTIP to 847411.
