After completing a lengthy investigation into the house fire that killed Jessi Pierce and her three children in March, authorities have determined the fire was an accident and that the beloved hockey reporter had very little time to escape the fast-moving flames.
Pierce, who was 37, covered the Minnesota Wild for NHL.com, hosted a popular podcast, and was a regular contributor to multiple Twin Cities radio stations, including KFAN, SkorNorth, and WCCO Radio. In the early morning hours of March 21, she died with her three young children — Hudson, Cayden, and Avery — and the family’s dog. By the time firefighters arrived, the 1952 rambler in White Bear Lake, Minnesota was engulfed in flames.
On Thursday, September 24, authorities held a press conference to reveal findings of their investigation. Minnesota State Fire Marshal Dan Krier deemed the fire to be accidental, per KARE11, revealing that flames started in a home office with equipment plugged into an extension cord that stretched outside the room, given that there were no wall outlets available.

According to Krier, there was not a smoke alarm in the office, so it took four minutes before a battery-operated smoke alarm elsewhere in the home was triggered. Krier explained, per WCCO, that this meant Pierce and her children had only one minute to escape, and that it was likely “too smokey and dangerous to safely exit the home by the time the alarm sounded.”
Jessi Pierce’s Husband Issued a Heartbreaking Statement at News Conference
Pierce’s husband, Mike Hinrichs, was not at home when the fire broke out around 5:30 a.m. on March 21. Officials read a heartbreaking statement from him at the press conference, in which he said, “This truly unfathomable loss and all-consuming grief is with me every day and will be forever with every breath God allows me to take.”
“My deepest thanks and gratitude go out to all those in the community that have supported me and our other family members in this darkest of times,” Hinrichs’ statement continued. “Your kindness has not gone unnoticed, even if we have been too numb to adequately acknowledge your compassion and sympathy.”
Hinrichs also said in his statement, “Family always came first for Jessi, but all things hockey ran a close second. She loved the Wild and the game of hockey with boundless enthusiasm and communicated her joy and passion for the sport to all those who could hear her voice.”
In December, a youth hockey tournament called the Jessi PIerce Community Cup, hosted by the Minnesota Wild, with proceeds benefitting women who are pursuing careers in sports media.
