But the inspiration for “Miss You” came heavily from Jagger’s nights dancing at ‘70s discotheques, a trend Richards dismissed—at first.
“We didn’t think much of ‘Miss You’ when we were doing it,” Richards once said, according to Salon. “It was ‘Aah, Mick’s been to the disco and has come out humming some other song.’ It’s a result of all the nights Mick spent at Studio 54 and coming up with that beat, that four on the floor.”
“We just thought we’d put our oar in on Mick wanting to do some disco s—, keep the man happy,” the guitarist added. “But as we got into it, it became quite an interesting beat. And we realized, maybe we’ve got a quintessential disco thing here. And out of it we got a huge hit. The rest of the album doesn’t sound anything like ‘Miss You.’”

Jagger has said he didn’t set out to make a disco album with Some Girls, which is why the album features an eclectic mix of genres, with tracks such as the country-tinged “Far Away Eyes.”
“I just had one song that had a dance groove: ‘Miss You,’” he told Rolling Stone in 1995. “But I didn’t want to make a disco album. But ‘Miss You’ really caught the moment, because that was the deal at the time. And that’s what made that record take off. It was a really great record.”
Decades after its release, “Miss You” stands as one of the Rolling Stones’ biggest survival moves—proof that they were able to turn a shifting cultural moment into one of their greatest hits of all time.
