ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Healthcare workers are walking out at the University of Rochester today, but not over budgets or contract negotiations. The Trump administration removed temporary protected status for 13 countries, sparking concerns among local healthcare workers and union leaders.
The rally is Thursday from 11:30am-12pm outside the College of Nursing; encouraging lawmakers to restore legal status for affected workers. The U.S. provides temporary protected status to people from countries impacted by safety conditions like war and natural and man-made disasters.
TPS workers come from countries with war or disaster. The Immigration Council shows about 20 percent of workers in the country are non-citizens.
The vice president of SEIU 1199 said the union has a high number of workers with this distinction. The union is worried the removal will worsen existing staffing shortages at hospitals and nursing homes.
“We’re seeing individuals who are extremely concerned that they are deported or required to return to their country harm will come their way,” Tracey Harrison said.
“People don’t just wake up all the sudden and think I want to cook food or transport patients or I want to take care of students. This is something they care for strongly and this is why they do what they do,” Harrison said.
When asked if SEIU 1199 is already seeing workers leave their roles due to removal concerns, Harrison said yes. Care will not be impacted during the rally at the University of Rochester.
