Sombr is opening up about the best piece of advice he’s gotten from Taylor Swift—and it’s not what fans may expect.
In an interview with Elle published on Wednesday, Sept. 23, the 21-year-old singer-songwriter shared insight into his relationship with the superstar, who has become a mentor to him.
Earlier this year, Swift hand-selected Sombr to perform renditions of her songs “Cardigan” and “Dear John” at her Songwriters Hall of Fame induction ceremony. The two songs also happen to be among Sombr’s favorite tracks by the pop star.
“‘Dear John’ is a song that she wrote all by herself when she was around the age that I was when I got signed and started doing that,” he said. “When I listened to the lyrics, it really struck me: ‘Don’t you think I was too young to be messed with?’ I just think of where she was at that time and where I was at that time, and I’m like, yeah, that’s real.”
Later in the interview, Sombr shared the advice Swift gave him as the “12 to 12” singer navigates his meteoric rise to fame, which began last year.
“One of the best pieces of advice the legend has given me—The person I look up to most has given me. The amazing pop star. Is that if these hate comments go away, maybe you’re not at your peak anymore. I think it’s a privilege to be receiving these and rise above it,” Sombr said.
“Ever since she gave me that advice, it’s really changed my perspective and has helped,” he added.

In particular, Sombr faced his first major moment of internet scrutiny last year when a TikTok user’s criticism of his allegedly inappropriate behavior in front of underage fans at one of his early shows went viral.
Sombr responded on TikTok at the time, saying that he’s “never uttered a serious word in his life” and that he spends “five minutes” making jokes at his shows, while the rest is music.
“I wouldn’t respond now,” Sombr told Elle. “I think responding only makes it worse. I was a teenager when I was kind of just pushed into the spotlight. All of a sudden, this is one of my first instances of being hated on a larger scale. I thought I needed to defend myself.”
Swift has also been complimentary of the young star, praising him during her Songwriters Hall of Fame induction speech.
“His writing is so exceptional that it makes me actually envious, and I love that feeling. He’s gonna be the top of my Spotify Wrapped this year, guaranteed. It’s locked. It’s in the bag. A lot of my late-night debates with my friends about the state of the music industry involve me saying very loudly, ‘Sombr is the future, and he does it all on his own and he doesn’t need that AI! The kids are fine!'”
