According to Jeff Probst, Survivor 51 will live in an odd purgatorial period in the show’s history. The upcoming season will officially kick off the “open era,” which makes every previous twist, idol, and advantage possible to show up. But, simultaneously, a knowledge of Survivor history is not necessarily going to be a free ticket to a million-dollar check.“51 would never have happened in Season 46,” Probst tells Parade in an exclusive interview. “51 is now going to be what it is. It’s going to have a certain set of twists and advantages and switches and either a Final Three or a Final Two and firemaking or no firemaking. When that’s over, we shake up the toy box, and we do it again.”

Even though Survivor 51 won’t necessarily be predicated on the prior evolution of the game, the cast of 21 players has done their homework in studying up on Survivor history. And it’s safe to say they have some opinions. During the season’s premiere event, Parade got the chance to talk with most of the cast, where we asked for their “hottest” Survivor takes, their most controversial opinions on a player, a season or the show in general.Suffice it to say, the open-ended question prompted a variety of responses from the open era contestants. Some shouted out underrated winners, runners-up, and seasons. Others called for more sneakiness and showmances on the beach. One brave soul even outright says there should be more nudity on the show, simply because “it’s hilarious.”Unfortunately, we were unable to get answers from farmer Carter Krull, personal trainer Ori Jean-Charles and medical student An “Thien An” Nguyen. Survivor: Nicaragua is a very underrated season. I think it gets so much hate, and it doesn’t deserve it. Because what people don’t understand is, when you watch Survivor: Nicaragua as a comedy, it’s like the Naked Gun movies. You know what I mean? No one’s going in expecting an Oscar-worthy performance from Leslie Nielsen, but he gives one because he commits to the comedy. And I think Survivor: Nicaragua is a very entertaining season. And if you have that skill, you’re good in Season 1, and you’re good in 51. The core fundamentals aren’t different. Yeah, there’s idols, there’s whatever. But like, you’re telling me that like, Ethan Zohn couldn’t figure out an idol? It’s not that complicated! At the end of the day, it’s a game about people and politics, and those same people would be good anytime.When Richard Hatch steps off in the Final Three in Borneo, and he’s like, “I’m doing this to get a jury vote so that I can win.” The gamer wins. The person who understands people wins, and that set the precedent from then on. I think the only evolution ever happened in that moment. There are a couple of other key moments, like Colby picking Tina. But that just changes the meta. The core fundamentals are the same.

Well, so I used to say that Cook Islands is really good, but I think people agree with that. I got kicked off of the Survivor chat boards back in 2008 for advocating for a “gay versus straight” Survivor. I would [want] queer versus straight Survivor, because I think that if you put queer folks in tribes and straight folks in tribes, one of those tribes would know what was happening immediately, and the other would have no clue. And that would be interesting to watch play out. I love that stuff when Survivor goes way too far.

I think my hottest take is that people think it’s just a TV show and you’re out there and then people go, “Alright, cut! Guys, go in your hotel rooms.” Nothing like that. It is literally a game of survival. You maybe have a little water, then if you want food, you got to go find it. If you don’t find it, you’re not gonna eat. That’s just how it is.
