Every comedian and writer who has crossed paths with the Saturday Night Live creator and executive producer, Lorne Michaels, just knows how special he is.
Michaels was just 30 years old when he created SNL, which was called NBC’s Saturday Night when it first premiered on Oct. 11, 1975. Almost 51 years later, he is the man responsible for many celebrity comedians’ careers, including Seth Meyers, Jimmy Fallon, Conan O’Brien, Tina Fey, John Mulaney, Kate McKinnon, Adam Sandler, Eddie Murphy and hundreds more.
On Tuesday, current SNL cast member Ashley Padilla was a guest on Amy Poehler’s podcast, Good Hang, where they talked about Padilla’s comedy career, what it was like working as Diane Keaton’s assistant, the decision to cut her hair, working at Sephora and even the time she got arrested. Poehler, who was also on the late-night sketch comedy show from 2001 to 2008, asked Padilla, who is about to start her third season on the show, what her relationship was like with Michaels.

“I just really really admire him,” Padilla said with a smile about her boss. “I just think he’s so smart and I can’t believe someone was put on this earth to give people like you and I [jobs].”
The 33-year-old comedian continued, laughing: “I don’t know if you think this, but like being funny is so insane… There are really important jobs in the world and then we’re just like [fart noise], jealous?”
Poehler then talked about her love for shows about people making comedy, because these comedians take everything so seriously. But after going on a bit of a tangent, Padilla brought back the original conversation, saying that “Lorne found a way to give those people jobs.”
“[He] gave us a place to work!” Padilla laughed. “Holy hell.”
Padilla joined the cast of SNL alongside Emil Wakim and Jane Wickline before the start of their 50th season in 2024. She grew up in the Bay Area, where she was introduced to sketch comedy as a teenager and regarded herself as funny as a child. Her mom encouraged Padilla to pursue a comedy career after a rough romantic breakup when she was 20 years old; then she moved to Los Angeles and trained at the Upright Citizens Brigade and The Groundlings. While pursuing comedy, she also worked as an assistant to Keaton, who passed away a year ago.
While at The Groundlings, Padilla caught the attention of talent manager Naomi Odenkirk, wife of actor-comedian Bob Odenkirk, and became a client. Odenkirk was able to book Padilla in various comedy festivals and Netflix is a Joke in 2024, which led to her being scouted by SNL talent agents.
Since joining SNL two years ago, Padilla has become a fan favorite and is best known for her comedic timing and sketches, including “Haircut”, “Surprise” and “Mom Confession.”
The 52nd season of SNL will premiere this Saturday on NBC and Peacock at 11:30 pm ET, with host Jalen Brunson and musical guest KATSEYE.
