The Chicago City Council’s Committee on Police and Fire voted to advance a proposal that would more than double funding from $30 million to $75 million per year and place up to 180 police officers per day on Chicago Transit Authority buses and trains.
“And it’s been a program that many of us that are former police officers have worked, and I believe that it works,” said 29th Ward Ald. Chris Taliaferro, who is a retired police officer. “And I think I certainly believe that it’s going to be instrumental in mitigating some of the crime we see on our trains.”
The CTA assignment would be voluntary for Chicago police officers, who would get overtime pay.
The proposal comes as CTA interim President Nora Leerhsen reports violent crime on the transit system has fallen 30% compared to the same period last year.
“And so if we can have more officers to even decrease those numbers even further, it makes for a…safer Chicago and a…safer transit system,” Taliaferro said.
But 18th Ward Ald. Derrick Curtis said the extra officers would be better deployed in neighborhoods, and CTA should have its own full-time dedicated officers.
“I think that they should go back to having their own police force,” Curtis said. “I think, I think that people would be definitely safer if they hired their own police.”
The boost in funding comes after the Federal Transit Administration threatened to withhold $50 million in federal transit funding unless the CTA added more security.
The threat came in the wake of a high-profile incident last November, where a man was accused of setting fire to a passenger on a CTA Blue Line train. The loss in funding has not yet materialized.
NBC Chicago talked to riders at the busy Roosevelt and State Street stops, who expressed mixed feelings about the new safety plan.
“To have some additional assistance for safety concerns, I think that’s a good idea,” one rider named Carol said.
“These men and women probably have other people to save,” said CTA rider Nicholas Kenner. “…I don’t think it would be the best idea.”
The Chicago police officers would be in addition to a Cook County Sheriff’s Police detail and some private security.
