ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester Red Wings are set to take on the Memphis Red Birds in their playoff opener, and fans gathered at ESL Ball Park for a watch party to cheer on their team.
News10NBC reporter Declan Stablow was at the ballpark where fans started showing up around 4 p.m. It’s been 29 years since the Wings last won the Governors Cup in 1997, and fans are hoping for another championship.
“It’d be awesome. It’d be almost like Buffalo with the bills winning there. You know, us having a championship team, that’d be awesome,” Jamel Wilson said.
Craig Thesing has fond memories from the last time the Red Wings won it all. “I was excited when they won, I was jumping up and down. I’m excited – I cant wait to watch the game tonight,” Thesing said.
LJ Autovino got to the stadium around 4 p.m. She was following along as the Wings clinched their first playoff spot since 2013.
Wilson made sure he was geared up for the game. “I have a Red wings hat on now. And I was just about, I was looking at some hats and I was just getting ready to go over there and purchase another,” Wilson said.
Rochester might not have its own pro sports teams, but fans say that’s why they have so much pride in the Wings. “We can come together in a shared community space and be room for someone and still feel connected. You know, there’s not too many ways we feel connected as Rochester, I feel like as much. And sports is one of those ways. It’s kind of easy to connect,” Thad Schickling said.
“It makes Rochester relevant and brings people here. It’s exciting city. You know, It get a bad name sometimes, but it’s positive. It’s positive and like I said, it. And it’s a place where families can go,” Wilson said.
It’s not just the team and players these fans take pride in. “Seeing the mascot characters, Mitzi and Spike, those are the best ones, getting selfies with them. That’s really my favorite thing. And just, just cheering on the Red wings,” Joshua Cerasuolo said.
The watch party for the game was scheduled for 7:45 p.m. at ESL Ball Park. Fans can also watch the game by downloading the free Bally Sports app.
