Saturday Night Live star Ashley Padilla is opening up about the lasting impact working as late actress Diane Keaton‘s assistant has had on her.
During the September 22 episode of Amy Poehler‘s podcast, Good Hang, Padilla shared how she began working for Keaton before she was cast on SNL for its 50th season in 2024. She explained that “when [she] moved to L.A., [her] mother’s friend’s sister was her main assistant” and hired her “to do errands” for Keaton. Padilla also shared she wasn’t overly familiar with Keaton’s films before she began working for her.
“I knew her as the mom from Family Stone, right? I did not watch Annie Hall. I had not seen The Godfather,” said Padilla before sharing that Keaton eventually had her watch the iconic films.
The 33-year-old comedian also explained that she was eventually tasked to “run Diane’s Instagram,” which led her to spending more time with Keaton, who died in October 2025 at the age of 79.
“Then it just all snowballed, and slowly, it became my whole life at a time. Like reading scripts and working on projects, and we eventually sold a book together,” said Padilla, in reference to Keaton’s 2024 book, Fashion First.
Padilla then shared that spending time with Keaton helped her keep her childlike wonder.
“She got me to notice everything as if I was with a child. It’s so crazy. It was wonder like a child that she kept into her 70s. And that’s what’s rare. It’s not that she was any different than anybody else,” said Padilla during the podcast interview. “She was just willing to stick with that and keep that wonder that goes away at some point. Because it taught me that it was even going away in myself because she brought it back. And now I see those things.”

While recording the Good Hang podcast episode, Padilla shared that Keaton would “come to Groundlings shows,” where she did sketch comedy. According to Padilla, she had discouraged Keaton from coming to the shows because she was concerned that she would “get mobbed” by the audience and her fellow Groundlings performers. In addition, Padilla wanted her to keep her life as Keaton’s assistant and “a struggling comedian” separate.
“I always said to her, I said, ‘You shouldn’t come to this. And I mean it.’ And she was like, ‘I’m coming and I’m going to wear a tutu and a big old hat,'” quipped Padilla.
Padilla then said that while Keaton promised to “lay low,” she was quite noticeable, as her tutu was “getting on people” while she tried to get to her seat. The SNL star also fondly remembered that Keaton was enthusiastic and generous with her laughter while watching “every sketch.”
When Poehler said Keaton “really was a fairy godmother” down to the way she dressed, Padilla quickly agreed with the sentiment.
