Just as one royal blockbuster is produced, so another one pops up.
Earl Spencer’s book Swan Song – Diana, My Sister came out on Tuesday. And it now emerges that Prince Harry is in talks to make a documentary about Diana, Princess of Wales, to coincide with the 30th anniversary of her death next year.
He is said to have approached Diana’s friends and relations, including Lord Spencer, to appear as talking heads. Why on earth are they doing it? For each man respectively it is no doubt a way to honour a sister and mother whom they loved. But equally, both Prince Harry and Earl Spencer loathe the press for understandable reasons – the paparazzi hounded her to her death in 1997.
In his memoirs, Earl Spencer draws a “direct line” between the fraudulent journalist Martin Bashir’s interview and Diana’s death. Diana’s personal driver was sacked because Bashir falsely claimed he was an informant. And so her driver on the night she died was Henri Paul, who was drunk and who worked for Mohamed Fayed.
In his eulogy for Diana, Spencer said, “Of all the ironies about Diana, perhaps the greatest was this – a girl given the name of the ancient goddess of hunting was, in the end, the most hunted person of the modern age.”
How ironic, too, that two men who loathe the media – particularly in relation to the life and death of their sister and mother – should court it over the same story.
In Harry’s case, Diana’s life and death are the last bits of his life he hasn’t mined in depth in his TV shows.
The Sussexes’ jam-making shows have hardly set Netflix alight – no doubt the streaming giant would love a Diana programme in time for the 30th anniversary of her death. And how quick and easy it would be to make, with the right sort of A-list talking heads.
Harry has burnt his bridges with the Royal Family. None of them would touch him with a bargepole after he dredged their conversations for his memoir and interview with Oprah Winfrey. Don’t expect Prince William, who must be spitting blood at the documentary, to be taking part.
So Harry is running desperately low on fresh footage. The answer? Use hours of childhood coverage with the most adored woman of the modern age.
There may not be a financial aspect. Harry might give the proceeds to charity – as he did with a chunk of the money from Spare.
Earl Spencer, with his 13,000-acre Althorp estate, doesn’t need the money – even if his recent third divorce won’t come cheap.
Irrespective of money, both men are longing for their version of events to be told.
Earl Spencer is a historian by profession. And a good one, too. Meanwhile, Harry, in his own view, has been marginalised as the spare – the younger son, whose opinions have always taken second place. This documentary would be another way to pay public tribute to his beloved mother.
King Charles and William have bottomless fortunes. They don’t need to publish books or make TV shows to top up the current account. Their security, too, as official members of the Royal Family, isn’t paid for out of that current account – unlike Harry, raging at having to pay for his own protection.
The King and William are the top dogs. They are in charge of the great royal caravan – and can direct it where they want, boosted not just by money, but by a vast press team. TV companies and news channels are already queuing up to film them on their own terms – why sell their souls and muddy their hands with commercial deals?
Earl Spencer and Harry have, for much of their lives, witnessed what they see as a sanitised version of the Royal Family and a warped picture of Diana.
At 62, Earl Spencer has said the book is called Swan Song partly because it’s “my sign off… my final take on the situation”. Prince Harry may be 20 years younger, but he, too, knows there may never be a better time to tell his story – when all those talking heads are still alive – than on the 30th anniversary of Diana’s death.
