ROCHESTER, N.Y. — CHS Ambulance is now the first in the region to carry blood for emergency transfusions. It’s thanks to a new partnership with University of Rochester Medicine and Strong Memorial Hospital.
The new service allows ambulance crews to give blood at the scene or on the way to the hospital. The program relies on close coordination with the blood bank to make sure blood is always available and safe to use.
“We get blood from U of R blood bank. We keep it until there’s about seven days left prior to expiration, we return it to the blood bank, and they will absolutely use it within those seven days, and we will get new units of blood with a longer expiration,” said Frank Manzo, chief of operations at CHS. “So that was an integral part of this program we came up with, and the blood bank huge in helping us come up with this plan that we dreamed of over a year ago.”
Partners have also created strict guidelines for storing and handling blood in the field, aiming to set a new standard for emergency care.
