Which teams have held a winning position the longest in the Premier League this season, and which have spent the most time trailing? We look at every team’s time in each game state after five matchdays of 2026-27.
Manchester City have started the 2026-27 campaign with five wins from five and are the only team with a 100% record in the competition.
Therefore, it’s hardly a shock to see Enzo Maresca’s side lead the rankings for proportion of game time spent in a winning position.City are the only side to have been winning for over half (52%) of match minutes this season, but their opening game of the campaign at home to Bournemouth was a different story.
Trailing after a 27th-minute goal from Marcus Tavernier, City worked their way back into the game with an 84th-minute Marc Guéhi strike, before Josko Gvardiol won the game in added time.
That match saw them hold the lead for only four minutes and 52 seconds. The 60 minutes and 52 seconds that they were behind is the longest by any team that’s gone on and won a match in the Premier League this season.
City led the Premier League ranking for proportion of game time spent in a winning position across last season too (48.6%), but that was irrelevant in the end. Arsenal, who spent 44.5% of match time winning, ended up with the league title, finishing seven points clear of their rivals.
Bournemouth are yet to win a match in the Premier League this season but they have only been in a losing position for 9.3% of game time – the third lowest proportion. They have, however, lost a league-high nine points from winning positions, which might explain their winless run under new boss Marco Rose.
In three games so far, the Cherries have held a lead for more than 50 minutes before eventually failing to pick up all three points: Man City on MD1 (60:52), Everton on MD2 (52:29) and Newcastle on MD3 (82:11).
Arguably the most eye-catching number after five matchdays of this season is Brentford’s time spent in a losing position.
Keith Andrews’ side have been losing for just three minutes and 10 seconds of match action this season – that coming in the 2-2 away draw with Bournemouth on 12 September.
That means that they have been losing for just 0.6% of Premier League game time this season (rounded up to 1% in the viz above), which is substantially lower than the next lowest: Leeds on 8.6%.
At the other end of the spectrum, it’s been a miserable start to the season for Tottenham, who sit bottom of the Premier League table as we reach the extended international break.
Roberto De Zerbi’s team failed to score in their first four league games of 2026-27, and when they did finally find the net in the MD5 defeat to Aston Villa through Conor Gallagher in the 86th minute, they were already 3-0 down. That means that they haven’t led for a single second of Premier League action this season – the only team yet to do so.
Sunderland have only been in a winning position for 3.9% of their match time this season. That all came in the final 19 minutes and 24 seconds of their game against Fulham on MD2 after Wilson Isidor’s strike decided a tight game at the Stadium of Light.
