No penalties will be given to NASCAR race drivers Ryan Blaney and Carson Hocevar, who got into a physical fight after their race this past Saturday at Bristol Motor Speedway, according to the organization’s CEO, Steve O’Donnell.

O’Donnell was a guest on Kevin Harvick’s Happy Hour podcast on Monday, where he talked about the situation for the first time since it happened. The CEO noted, like other NASCAR officials, that drivers “need to handle their business outside of the car.”
“If drivers are going to handle their own business, the way we looked at that, how it played out, we’re not going to encourage fighting, but what we are going to encourage is passion, right?” O’Donnell said. “And those are two guys — Blaney’s showing his passion, showing his fire. So no, there’s nothing coming from us in terms of [penalties]. We’ll obviously watch what happens the rest of the way, but nothing in terms of post-race penalties.”

In the battle for second place, Hocevar attempted a crossover move on Blaney and darted to his left. Blaney then attempted to block the pass and contact was made, sending Blaney’s car into a wall. The team deemed the damage irreparable given the few laps remaining, ending Blaney’s day early.
After Blaney was evaluated and released from the care center, he walked over to Hocevar’s car. Blaney quickly reached for the racer, and Hocevar reacted by swinging, landing punches before Blaney fell to the ground. Blaney quickly got back up and punched him back, before the two were separated.
“I understand why he’s [Blaney’s] upset. That’s probably his championship. So I understand 100%. And I’d probably be mad at me, too,” Hocevar told the press on Saturday night. “Whether it was his mistake, my mistake, my fault or not, I’d be pretty pissed if I was him.”
The next day, Blaney spoke with Denny Hamlin on his Actions Detrimental podcast about the situation, saying both of them shared responsibility, and he believed that the situation didn’t warrant being wrecked.
“I didn’t think I deserved to just get absolutely trashed,” the 32-year-old racer said about Hocevar and the situation. “I haven’t had a problem with Carson in a while. Like, he turned me around Atlanta a year or so ago. But other than that, we haven’t been, you know, haven’t had any problems.”
NASCAR Communications stated on Monday that “further review is being conducted to determine penalties to any crew members involved in the incident, and if necessary, any penalties will be announced later this week.”
