“Every player is begging for two-game slumps.”
That’s Craig Counsell on Pete Crow-Armstrong, via the Tribune, and it definitely sums up how good PCA has been this year. When he has a couple down games, we notice. People discuss it. Then he explodes again, as he did yesterday. Most players DREAM of “slumps” that last two days.
“It’s really a testament to how good he’s been this year,” Counsell said. “When two games don’t go well, it’s like, ‘Oh, gosh, he hasn’t hit a home run,’ or ‘He hasn’t got a hit.’ That speaks to what he’s accomplished this year and how well he’s performed. It’s coming, that’s how it’s going to be this year. You may get him a day or two, but it’s coming.”
Yup, it’s coming:
Those 45 home runs tie Pete Crow-Armstrong with Kyle Schwarber for the MLB lead, which is probably something we don’t fawn over quite enough, given all the other success. This dude who is one of the best defensive players in recent memory just also happens to have as many home runs as the bat-only hulking slugger who is KNOWN for hitting home runs.
PCA obviously also stole base number 38 in the game, leaving him just two away from the 40-40 mark. It’s not as if that suddenly transforms his year – it’s already one of the best in baseball history – but it does feel like a nice, cool exclamation point that all baseball fans know is meaningful.

No other players in baseball history have combined 45 homers with 30 doubles and 35 stolen bases. Arbitrary lines, obviously, but I still like it. I will never get tired of lists like that.
