We’re five matches into the 2026-27 Premier League season, meaning we now have more information than we did at the start of the campaign. So, how have the title predictions changed in the Opta supercomputer’s model?
It’s still very early days, but the nascent Premier League table is beginning to take shape as we head into the international break.
With five wins from five, Manchester City sit at the summit as the only team with a 100% winning record. Opta’s pre-season favourites, Arsenal, are second, three points behind, with Brighton and Brentford, who have both made hugely impressive starts, rounding out the top four.
But how have those early-season results affected the Opta supercomputer’s predictions for the title? Let’s find out.
As a reminder, Arsenal were the model’s pre-season favourites. The Opta supercomputer gave them a 40.6% chance of defending their 2025-26 title on the eve of the season.
Manchester City (19.6%) were comfortably second favourites, followed by Liverpool (9.2%) and Manchester United (6.6%).
Current Title Favourites
Despite suffering a heavy defeat to Brighton at the weekend, Arsenal remain the Opta supercomputer’s favourites to lift the trophy, with a 43.7% chance of winning the title.
But only just.
Manchester City (39.8%) are hot on their heels. Their perfect start, as well as Arsenal’s weekend defeat, means the title race is now definitely a two-horse contest in the supercomputer’s eyes, rather than the procession many thought it might be for Arsenal.
Together, Arsenal and Man City account for 83.4% of all the title equity in the supercomputer’s predictions.
Liverpool (5.7%) are the model’s third favourites. They are currently unbeaten under new manager Andoni Iraola, but have drawn three of their five games so far. As a result, their title hopes have fallen by 3.5 percentage points, from 9.2% before the season to 5.7% now.
Brighton, the architects of Arsenal’s downfall this weekend, have made a hugely impressive start. They are the division’s top scorers with 16 goals, boast the best goal difference at +11 and handed Arsenal their first defeat since 19 April, 155 days ago. They look like the real deal.
The Seagulls are now fourth in the Opta supercomputer’s title predictions, with a 4.2% chance of winning an improbable Premier League title.
From there, a multitude of teams are clustered around the 1% mark. Brentford have a 1.2% chance, Everton 1.1%, Chelsea 1.0%, and Manchester United are given a 0.9% chance.
Biggest Risers
Manchester City’s title chances have increased by 20.2 percentage points, more any other team across the first five matchdays.
As mentioned, City began the season as the supercomputer’s second favourites, but they have made a perfect start to life under Enzo Maresca.
Maresca is the sixth manager to win his first five Premier League games in charge of a club, after Carlo Ancelotti at Chelsea (six), Pep Guardiola at Manchester City (six), Craig Shakespeare at Leicester City (five), Maurizio Sarri at Chelsea (five) and Ole Gunnar Solskjær at Manchester United (six).
Arsenal’s title chances have also increased, rising 3.0 percentage points from their pre-season figure. That might seem surprising given their defeat to Brighton, but several of the teams that started the season among the favourites have already faltered.
Chelsea and Manchester United, for example, have both made poor starts, while Liverpool have dropped points in three of their first five games.
Brighton are the only other team to rise significantly. Their chances of winning the Premier League title have more than doubled (2.0% to 4.2%) following their excellent start.
Biggest Fallers
It’s been a disappointing start to the campaign for Manchester United.
Despite picking up a late point against Fulham, United have taken just five points from their opening five league games, their joint-fewest at this stage of a Premier League campaign, alongside 2014-15.
Their underlying numbers, however, look more encouraging. United lead the Premier League for total shots (113) and touches in the opposition box (182), but they’ve failed to turn that attacking presence into enough goals or points.

Aston Villa (-3.7%) have also endured a difficult start. They picked up their first win of the season on MD5 against a beleaguered Tottenham side, but lost three of their opening four matches. Their slow start has come after a summer of significant squad upheaval.
Chelsea (-2.8%), meanwhile, began the season at a rip-roaring pace under Xabi Alonso, scoring eight goals across their first two league matches.
Since then, however, they have gone three games without a win. Their inconsistent start has seen their title prospects drop, and the model now gives them just a 1.0% chance of winning the title.
Then there is Tottenham (-2.4%). For the first time since the 2008-09 season, Spurs are bottom of the Premier League after five matches. They rallied from that position in 2008-09 to finish eighth, and that’s a result Tottenham fans would surely take at this stage of the current campaign.
There is, of course, still a long way to go. Five matches is only a small sample, and the Opta supercomputer’s predictions will continue to evolve as more data points are added to the model.
