Racing in the final of the 1500m freestyle tonight at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre, former Indiana University swimmer Gan fired off a new lifetime best and Singaporean national record en route to claiming the silver medal.
China’s Li Bingjie ultimately got to the wall first in 15:53.52 as the decisive winner. However, Gan posted a mark of 16:00.45 to flirt with the 16:00 barrier and establish the fastest time of her career. Her performance overtook her former national record of 16:01.29 she set at the 2025 World Championships.
Splits for Gan’s outing this evening are below, as she somewhat surprisingly beat Japan’s open water World Championships gold medalist Ichika Kajimoto by a large margin. Kajimoto’s lifetime best rests at the 15:58.59 logged at the Japan Swim this past March, so the 22-year-old had an ‘off’ swim and Gan took full advantage.
Gan is coming off a standout performance at this year’s Commonwealth Games where she placed 5th in the highly competitive 400m freestyle, establishing a new lifetime best and national record of 4:09.34 in the process.
Prior to that performance, she set new national records in the 800m free (8:29.93) and 1500m free (16:01.29) at the 2025 World Championships. The former would have given her the bronze and the latter the silver at the 2022 Asian Games.
More recently, she came away with a trio of medals at the Southeast Asian Games last December, sweeping the women’s 200m, 400m and 800m freestyles.

China found their way back to the top of the podium, seeing Li Bingjie win the women’s 1500 freestyle in 15:53.52. While that swim was good to win the race by 7 seconds, Li was 10 seconds off her career best of 15:43.94, which she swam in May of 2025.
Singapore’s Ching Hwee Gan came in 2nd with a 16:00.45. The performance marks a career best for Gan, taking a second off her previous best of 16:01.29. Additionally, Gan’s swim tonight marks a new national record for Singapore.
Japan’s Ichika Kajimoto earned bronze tonight with a 16:06.83.
