Peters Honored Bob Mackie
Following the news that legendary designer Bob Mackie died at age 87 on Sept. 14, Peters honored the creative genius, whom she got to know while he worked on The Carol Burnett Show as the in-house costumer.
“Bob was one of the most talented people you’d ever want to meet,” Peters told PEOPLE. “He could take something, you could do a run-through of something, and he would get an idea and take it to the nth degree.”
Mackie designed several getups for Burnett, including a dress out of curtains that still had the curtain rod on it. She wore the costume to portray Scarlett O’Hara in the sketch Went With the Wind!, a play on Gone With the Wind.
“The line was ‘Something I saw in the window.’ He actually made her clothes from curtains and left the curtain rod in,” Peters recalled, noting that the designer also made her wedding dress for her 1996 nuptials to Michael Wittenberg.
“I mean, he was just brilliant, just brilliant. And lovely and kind,” she said.
