College volleyball player Amanda Mack has died at age 20.
Mack died Wednesday, Sept. 16, following an illness, according to the College of the Holy Cross, where she had recently enrolled and was recruited to play volleyball.
Her death came just months after the athlete publicly revealed that she had been diagnosed with severe aplastic anemia, a rare and serious blood disorder.

Mack was a 6-foot-1 outside hitter from Florida who played college volleyball at Cincinnati and Eastern Kentucky before transferring to Holy Cross.
Before beginning her collegiate career, Mack attended IMG Academy and became the school’s volleyball program’s first Under Armour All-American. She was also a two-time Under Armour Next MVP and was selected to play in the 2024 Under Armour Next All-America Game.
Mack began her college career at Cincinnati in 2024 before transferring to Eastern Kentucky for her sophomore season. While playing for the Colonels, she appeared in 29 matches, started 26 and recorded 204 kills.
On May 9, Mack shared another milestone with her social media followers, announcing that she would continue her academic and athletic career at Holy Cross.
Just over two months later, her posts took an unexpected turn.
What Illness Did Amanda Mack Have?
On July 13, Mack revealed on Instagram that she had been diagnosed with severe aplastic anemia after suddenly becoming critically ill.
Mack said she initially sought medical attention after waking up with a severe headache and later passing out. Doctors initially considered leukemia as a possible diagnosis before two bone marrow biopsies revealed severe aplastic anemia.
According to the National Library of Medicine, severe aplastic anemia is a rare and serious condition that occurs when the bone marrow does not produce enough new blood cells. The condition can leave patients more susceptible to infections and uncontrolled bleeding.
Mack continued updating her followers as she underwent treatment.
In an Aug. 14 post, the athlete shared that she had completed immunosuppressive therapy at Tampa General and experienced minimal adverse reactions.
“Now we wait for my body to fix my immune system and regenerate my bone marrow,” Mack wrote at the time.

She added that she hoped to soon return home and begin physical therapy as part of her recovery.
An official cause of death has not been publicly announced.
How Is Amanda Mack Being Remembered?
Holy Cross confirmed Mack’s death Friday, Sept. 18, saying she had enrolled at the college over the summer but was unable to join the volleyball team on campus due to her illness.
“Losing a member of our HCVB family is devastating, and Amanda will be missed immensely,” Holy Cross volleyball head coach Matthew Cribbin said in a statement.
The school announced that moments of silence would be held in Mack’s honor ahead of the volleyball team’s matches against American and Navy, as well as the Holy Cross football game.
Mack’s former programs also mourned the athlete.
