Nash recalls one day when he and Mitchell woke up and went to get breakfast at a delicatessen on Ventura Boulevard. Down the road was an antique store, and Mitchell had seen a vase that she had fallen in love with through the window. The vase was relatively cheap, so Mitchell bought it and brought it home.
“It was a kind of a cold gray morning as it sometimes can be in Los Angeles, and I said, ‘Why don’t I light the fire and you put some flowers in the vase that you just bought.’ So she’s cutting stems and leaves and arranging flowers in this vase, and I’d lit the fire. Now, my and Joan’s life at the time were far from ordinary … and I thought, ‘What an ordinary moment.’ Here I am lighting the fire for my old lady and she’s putting flowers in this vase that she just bought. And I sat down at Joan’s piano and an hour later, ‘Our House’ was written,” explained Nash.
Nash wrote “Our House” in roughly an hour and got a few good takes from the get-go in a studio in Los Angeles. Crosby and Stephen Stills later heard the song and “loved it and sang on it.”
Sadly, Mitchell and Nash’s relationship was short-lived. It was explained as being “bad timing,” with Mitchell having been married once before. The idea of settling down rattled the singer, and she once told Rolling Stone she “was being isolated, starting to feel like a bird in a gilded cage.” Mitchell ended up backpacking through Europe and sending a telegram to Nash that they were over.
Nash admitted he grew tired of the song 24 hours after writing it, but doesn’t deny, “It’s about a beautiful moment between a man and a woman. It’s about peace. Even though the times were turbulent, particularly with the Vietnam War, and Civil Rights, two and a half minutes of peace was what we all needed.”
