You’d be hard-pressed to find someone who doesn’t dread a certain song after hearing it butchered at karaoke or simply played way too often.
Cue “Friends in Low Places” and “Sweet Caroline”—or so you might think.
It’s not Garth Brooks “blaming his roots” or Neil Diamond “ba-ba-ba-bing” his way to the top of the list of most-requested karaoke songs for 2026.

It’s actually late singer Amy Winehouse taking the cake. While her highest-charting song is “Rehab,” which reached No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100, it’s her own reimagining of U.K. indie-rock band The Zutons’ song “Valerie” that’s taking the top spot—and it oddly enough has some rehab-like ties to it.
“Valerie” was written about a real person named—you guessed it—Valerie Star. The Zutons’ lead singer Dave McCabe met her during a tour run in Florida, where the pair became close, but couldn’t visit each other since Star was in legal trouble for driving under the influence.
Being a Brit herself, Winehouse was a fan of the band and suggested putting her own spin on the song with producer/songwriter Mark Ronson.
That turned out to be one of the best decisions of her career, as their soulful rendition reached No. 2 on the U.K. singles chart.

For 2026, “Valerie” is the most requested karaoke song, with aforementioned “Sweet Caroline” in second place and Chris Stapleton’s “Tennessee Whiskey” rounding out the top three—though the biggest surprise may be mainstream newcomer Olivia Dean with “Man I Need” coming in fifth.
