Sharon Stone played the iconic serial killer Catherine Tramell in Basic Instinct. The 1992 mystery film was the fourth highest-grossing movie of the year, earning Academy Award nominations for best film editing and best original score. When speaking with Variety on September 17, Stone discussed the way people treated her after watching the film.
“What they would do is they would show the film to the press and then bring them in to interview me,” Stone explained. “They were terrified, and they would sit down opposite me and panic.”

She continued, “That hasn’t changed; people are still terrified of me in one way or another. I think that the basic construct of a woman declaring herself as separate and indomitable was, and remains, a terrifying construct.”
Stone also spoke about the unfair perception others have of her to this day. “I also really understand how I need to say, ‘Hi, I’m Sharon. What’s your name?’ But it’s not me, right? It’s very hard for people to understand that I’m a fragile, physically little, delicate, shy, private, loner, gentle, very empathetic artist.”

During her interview, she also spoke about her childhood, addressing how she once brought a bat to school and would chase other students around with snakes. “I wouldn’t say so much that I was dark as I’ve always been full,” she said. “I’m as fascinated by the dark as I am by the light; I’m not afraid of it. I was always in trouble for my naivete, mostly about why everybody was scared — scared of me bringing the bat to school, scared of me picking up snakes in the garden. People were scared when I wasn’t scared.”
Stone has appeared in many different television shows and movies, like Euphoria, Nobody 2, and The Disaster Artist. She won a Golden Globe for her work in Casino and was nominated for an Academy Award. She also won a Primetime Emmy Award for her guest role in The Practice.
