For the first time since 1974, Florida State will take on the No. 10 University of Alabama Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The matchup comes just days after Florida State’s Athletic Director Michael Alford, who rewarded head coach Mike Norvell his eight-year extension after the 2023 season, was released from his position. Bruce Warwick is now the Interim Director of Athletics.
“Florida State is committed to maintaining the highest standards for our student-athletes and staff,” President Richard McCullough said in a press release that was published on Sept. 14. “We want all of them to be able to play for championships. This leadership change reflects that commitment.”
With this new change happening right before the first away game of the season, Norvell and the Seminoles remain focused on the task at hand.
“When you get news like that, it’s always going to have an impact. Right now, I mean, everything’s about the preparation for what’s ahead here on Saturday,” Norvell said in a press conference on Sept. 14. “That’s going to be our focus. That’s going to be our work, and we’re going to move forward with that as fast as possible, making sure that we’re doing everything to put our players in the best position and our players are putting themselves in the best position to go be their best Saturday.”
What you should know before the 2:30 p.m. kickoff on Saturday:
FSU is looking to secure a victory against the Crimson Tide once again, and is entering this weekend’s matchup 1-1. The last time the ‘Noles won an away game was against the University of Florida, a 24-15 win that capped off an undefeated regular season in 2023.
During the 2025 season, the Garnet and Gold followed up their victory against Alabama with wins against East Texas A&M and Kent State University. However, that momentum slowed down when they allowed 46 points to the University of Virginia, losing by eight points. The energy began to fade as a result, falling short in games against the University of Miami, Pittsburgh University and Stanford University.
Florida State started the 2026 season off strong, with a 34-17 win over New Mexico State University, and put up a fight against Southern Methodist University, however, they fell short 27-24.
Eyes on these ‘Noles
Senior wide receiver Duce Robinson is in his second season with the Seminoles following a year where he was a Biletnikoff Award Semifinalist and the leading receiver for FSU with 1,081 yards. Against SMU, Robinson caught two passes and reached a milestone 100 receptions for his collegiate career.
Sophomore running back Ousmane Kromah ran for 115 yards in the season opener against New Mexico State, and 116 yards against SMU as well. He is currently ranked second in the Atlantic Coast Conference with an average of 115 yards per game. He scored his first two rushing touchdowns of the season and his career.
Senior running back Samuel Singleton Jr. took charge against SMU, notching 40 receiving yards and a career-long 39-yard touchdown, tying the game in the fourth quarter. He currently leads the ’Noles with three touchdowns in 2026, two receiving and one rushing.
Even after the loss to SMU, Norvell is optimistic about the Garnet and Gold, and what they will be able to do this coming weekend against the Crimson Tide.
“We understand that this is going to be a game that, there’s going to be a lot of things that carry over that look the same,” Norvell said. “But obviously, we got to go out there and we got to be prepared for all the different varieties…There’s great familiarity, but it’s going to be a heck of a battle.”
