Road Scholar just announced its first women-only Antarctica program, Spirit of Antarctica: Expedition for Women, a 15-day adventure created exclusively for female travelers in partnership with Aurora Expeditions.
And fittingly for a trip that requires a pretty major leap, it departs on Leap Day, February 29, 2028.
The adventure begins with two nights in Buenos Aires and one in Ushuaia before travelers board the Sylvia Earle, a purpose-built expedition ship named for pioneering marine biologist and oceanographer Sylvia Earle.
From there, it’s across the famously formidable Drake Passage to the Antarctic Peninsula, where travelers will explore by Zodiac and head ashore for hikes and landings among glaciers and icebergs, with opportunities to spot penguins, seals and whales along the way.

What Makes This Antarctica Expedition Different?
The biggest distinction is who’s leading the adventure. An all-female Expedition Team will run the show, from driving Zodiacs and leading hikes and shore landings to overseeing activities and delivering lectures onboard. Female guest speakers who have been pioneers in their respective fields will also join the voyage.
“There’s a special sense of camaraderie and belonging that happens when you have a group of women learning together,” Road Scholar’s Director of Program Management Eliza Carrera said in a press release announcing the trip.
And because this is Road Scholar, the experience isn’t just about checking the seventh continent off your bucket list. Education is woven throughout the voyage with an onboard library, interactive laboratory and programming led by the Expedition Team.
Limited to 24 participants, the Road Scholar group will have small-scale gatherings for socializing as well as a dedicated Group Leader throughout the journey.
