After over a year of casting rumors, Meryl Streep has officially been cast as the voice of Aslan in Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Narnia adaptation, The Magician’s Nephew. Set to release in theaters on February 12, 2027, the casting of Narnia’s lion protagonist was announced today by Empire.
“I wanted someone who was profound but not pretentious, who had gravitas but not morose self-seriousness,” Gerwig said to Empire. “Someone who could communicate depth and pathos as well as joy and delight. I wanted someone who was older than 70, so there was a wisdom of experience, but who also had the capacity of fresh wonder, like a child. And also to be one of the greatest actors to ever do it. That list is not a long one.”
This isn’t the first time Gerwig has collaborated with Streep. When Gerwig first started working on Little Women, she recalled in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that Streep “just [told her] that she was going to be in it.”
“Because she loves the book and she told me … ‘I’ll be Aunt March,’” Gerwig said. “She said, ‘Write me some good lines.’ I was like, ‘I will.’”
Streep’s Narnia casting announcement has been met with mixed reviews on social media. Some fans have supported the casting decision, while others are confused by it.
“Curious to see how they’re gonna make Aslan voiced by a woman sound half decent,” one user retorted on a post from Empire.
“I thought because she had done a good job with Little Women she would be better, but changing the whole idea of Aslan is not correct,” another said. “He is the main character, he is the message, changing him is changing everything.”
