The Rolling Stones guitarist covered “Bright Lights, Big City,” a blues song Jimmy Reed put out in 1961, for Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album.
It is one of six songs Rockstar Games released on Thursday, Sept. 17. The full 34-track soundtrack, made with Atlantic Records, drops Nov. 19, the same day as the game.

The 1961 Original
Reed’s version was a real hit. On Sept. 18, 1961, it sat at No. 4 on Billboard‘s R&B singles chart, according to the magazine’s own look-back column five years later. Reed went into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1991, inducted by ZZ Top. “I can’t buy a car without first playing a Jimmy Reed tape before driving it,” the band said, per the Hall.
The Rolling Stones, Van Morrison and the Grateful Dead are also among the acts who have covered him.
The Stones Recorded It in 1963
The Stones cut their own version at IBC Studios in London in March 1963, back when they were leaning hard on American blues. That take sat in the vault until 2012, when it came out on a box set edition of the compilation GRRR!.
Mick Jagger knew the song before the Stones even formed. His pre-Stones group, Little Boy Blue and the Blue Boys, had already recorded it.

Richards is in unusual company. The other five songs out Thursday come from Morgan Wallen, Travis Scott, Rauw Alejandro, Yung Lean with Future and Metro Boomin, and a track credited to CA7RIEL & Paco Amoroso, PinkPantheress, Fred again.. and Etienne de Crécy.
