Shailene Woodley’s Emmys outfit divided the internet, but her stylist is standing by her work.
Karla Welch, who styled Woodley for the 2026 Emmys, responded on Threads after the actress’ unconventional Balenciaga ensemble became a major talking point following Sunday’s ceremony.
“Love or hate something fine but it’s an opinion and it can even be a conversation but being super rude and mean and taking glee from it, well that says a lot more about the mouths it’s coming from. ?,” Welch wrote Tuesday, September 15.
The stylist, whose celebrity clientele also includes Olivia Wilde, Karlie Kloss, Sarah Paulson, Justin Bieber, and Hailey Bieber, hasn’t exactly backed away from the controversial look, either. A day later, on Wednesday, she proudly shared a photo of Woodley on the Emmys red carpet on Instagram alongside an image reading, “Trigger Warning.”
“We ♥️ pppiccioli ?,” Welch added, referencing Balenciaga creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli.
Fans were quick to chime in, yet again.
“Sometimes when we go Christmas tree shopping on the farm I see those spray painted trees and think, well someone will appreciate them but it’s not for me. That’s the closest to an opinion I can come to about this,” one wrote in the comments.
“So your behind this…” another quipped.
A third replied, “Karla we love you, but No. Not this one. Sorry!” while a fourth said, “You’re hilarious at least you’re standing behind your choice…”

Woodley’s head-turning outfit came straight from Balenciaga’s Fall 2026 Haute Couture collection and consisted of a low cut periwinkle top paired with embellished gold pants and burgundy opera gloves. She finished the ensemble with a colorful gemstone necklace.
Fashion wasn’t the only reason Woodley found herself making headlines during Emmys weekend. Her former fiancé Aaron Rodgers recently made several claims about their past relationship on the Not Just Football podcast, including alleging that Woodley told him she wanted to sleep with another man after they became engaged.
Woodley hasn’t publicly responded to the allegations. When a reporter asked her about Rodgers while she attended a pre-Emmys event in West Hollywood on Sunday, she laughed, smiled and continued walking without answering.
