Former Mets first baseman Pete Alonso drilled his 300th career home run on Tuesday at Citi Field. It came against closer Kodai Senga with the Orioles trailing by one in the ninth inning. The scene featured a monstrous bat toss, raucous cheers, and a curtain call for an opposing player. “I’ve just never seen anything like that before,” Mets righty Sean Manaea told reporters, including Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. “The guys in here, we are grinding our butts off and stuff like that happens. But I’ve never seen anything like that. It’s kind of crazy.” Baltimore ended up winning the game in the 11th inning on an inside-the-park home run from Coby Mayo.
2. Rocchio plays hero again
Chicago and Cleveland have played two battles so far in a critical three-game set. The White Sox won on Monday after an all-time at-bat from Tristan Peters. They were on the verge of taking the series until Brayan Rocchio came to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning. The infielder was at the center of Cleveland’s walk-off heroics in early September against the Tigers. He came through again on Tuesday. With two runners in scoring position, Rocchio lifted a fly ball just out of reach of left fielder Sam Antonacci, pushing across the tying and game-winning runs on one swing. The Guardians moved a half-game behind the White Sox in the AL Central.
3. Carrigg carries Rockies
Rookie outfielder Cole Carrigg put together one of the best games of his young career last night. The Rockies youngster piled up four hits, including two homers, and five RBI in a win over the Padres. Carrigg now has three homers in the series after taking Bradgley Rodriguez deep on Monday night. The rookie has shaken off a slow August to post a .957 OPS in September. Like many Colorado bats, Carrigg has big home/road splits. He has a .970 OPS at Coors Field compared to a .669 mark away from home. The Rockies will be at home for eight of their final 11 games.
