Carrboro High football won at East Chapel Hill in a long-lasting stalemate to achieve their first win of the season. After relentless effort from both sides, particularly on the defensive end, the game concluded 13-9 in favor of the Jaguars.
Students packed into the bleachers for Carrboro’s second consecutive rivalry district game, but this time, in opposing territory. Opposing student sections faced off in jeering chants, targeting the other.
The game started regrettably for the Jaguars offense, being pushed back to their own end zone and yielding a safety. Blunders such as this would be prominent throughout much of the beginning of the game. Both sides struggled on offense, so the game was transformed into a battle of defense. The two teams stomached multiple sacks and were forced into punts. East Chapel Hill accidentally touched the ball when trying to return and surrendered it back to the Jaguars; this resulted in Carrboro being granted significant yardage off of their own punt for a first down. The game continued like this for the rest of the first quarter, in which there were a series of sacks, fumbles, and minimal gains for either squad. It seemed as though this match would be resolved by whichever offense made more mistakes.
Turning away from their previous sluggish play, the Jaguars captured momentum with a sequence of defensive stops, and gains for their offense. A big pass to receiver Zachary Baumler gave an important first down for the Jaguars. This was followed up by another pass to Baumler, who, after juking his opponents, ran to the outside for the first touchdown of the game. After a successful extra point, Baumler was surprised to be welcomed with congratulations; he hadn’t realized he had scored, but was ecstatic after finding out.
With enough time for a final drive, East Chapel Hill intended to come back with their own score. Inching closer to the end zone, the Wildcats were close to canceling out the Jaguars touchdown with their own. However, Carrboro was able to stop them on a fourth down conversion, making it a turnover on downs to end the half with the Jaguars leading 7-2.
The game was unpredictable, as just one touchdown could completely flip the outcome of the game.
The second half started with strong defense once again, forcing numerous punts for each team. Neither roster was able to make any progress for the entirety of the third quarter with the game at a standstill as the offenses resumed their pattern of three-and-outs with no breakthrough.
Despite an uneventful third quarter, the fourth managed to start with a bang. After a solid string of gains, Carrboro receiver Max Sparrow hauled in a momentous touchdown, separating the Jaguars’ lead even further despite the missed PAT. However, determined to cut the score gap, East Chapel Hill converted on a huge fourth down pass in the ensuing drive, keeping their faith in the game. Rolling with their momentum, East Chapel Hill connected on an array of long distance passes, ending in their first touchdown of the night, making the game 13-9.
With the clock being drained, the Jaguars tried to run it down as much as possible with their next drive but had to punt with five minutes left. Put in a spot to get a game-winning drive, the Wildcats advanced up the field with ease. In a tough spot, Carrboro cornerback Nolan Boles came up clutch with an interception with three minutes remaining.
After using all their timeouts, East Chapel Hill was provided with one final drive in the final two minutes after a Carrboro punt. Their efforts, however, were futile. The Wildcats offense was unable to create any advantage, and were quickly subdued as the Carrboro defense put together one final stop to clinch the game.Once the clock hit zero, Jaguar fans rose to their feet, breathing in the momentous occasion as players dashed to the sideline, basking in their first taste of victory for the season.
Carrboro (1-3) will look to build off their win playing at Louisburg (2-1) on Friday, September 25. East Chapel Hill (1-2) will try to come back after the loss at Jordan-Matthews (2-2) also on September 25.
