Based on Harold Gray’s newspaper cartoon strip Little Orphan Annie, Annie follows the titular young orphan as she escapes from a rundown orphanage and finds herself the unlikely ward of a New York business tycoon.
With music by Charles Strouse and lyrics by Michael Charnin, Annie became one of the most acclaimed musicals of late ’70s Broadway, later paving the way to three separate film adaptations in 1982, 1999, and 2014, as well as a live TV version on NBC in 2021.
While each of these adaptations had varying levels of success, perhaps the most widely seen is the original 1982 adaptation starring Carol Burnett, Albert Finney, Bernadette Peters and the late Tim Curry.
