Young released “Hello Walls” on Feb. 27, 1961. The song entered the country chart on March 20 and continued climbing until it reached No. 1 on May 8.
It remained at the top for nine weeks.
The song was also a major crossover success. Young’s recording reached No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. It became Young’s only Top 40 pop hit in the United States.
The recording also featured Floyd “Lightnin’” Chance on double bass and the Wilburn Brothers on background vocals.
The success of “Hello Walls” helped establish Nelson’s name with a national audience. It also became the first song written by Nelson to reach No. 1 on the country chart.
Faron Young Helped Willie Nelson Keep the Song

Young did not buy the publishing rights. Instead, he loaned Nelson the money so Nelson could keep the publishing.

A little more than a month after the song reached No. 1, Nelson received his first royalty check for $20,000. He was so excited that he went looking for Young to thank him.
Young later described the meeting in his book, Live Fast, Love Hard: The Faron Young Story.
“I was sitting at Tootsie’s, and this big hairy arm came around my neck, and Willie French-kissed me,” Young wrote, per American Songwriter. “It’s probably the best kiss I ever had.”
The success of “Hello Walls” did not stop with Young’s recording. Other artists recorded the song in the years that followed, including Kitty Wells and Johnny Burnette. Nelson also recorded his own version.
Nelson included his recording on his 1962 debut album, …And Then I Wrote, per Songfacts. The album came after years of writing songs for other performers and helped mark the beginning of his recording career as an artist.
“Hello Walls” also continued to appear in different forms over the years. Nelson recorded a rock version with The Reverend Horton Heat for the 1996 album Twisted Willie.
In 2020, Nelson performed an updated version during his “Come And Toke It” livestream, which was broadcast on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. Accompanied by his sons Lukas and Micah, Nelson changed the final verse to reflect people around the world staying home during the COVID-19 pandemic.
