A power outage Sunday is causing issues at a suburban Joliet Exxon Mobil refinery, which could impact production and gas prices in the region.
According to a company spokesperson, a power outage occurred at the refinery at approximately 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
Photos and videos from around the facility showed a large plume of smoke billowing from the refinery. According to Exxon Mobil, the smoke was coming from the facility’s safety flares, a precautionary measure that also resulted in a shutdown of production.
Power has since been restored to the facility, but the facility is not producing at regular capacity, according to reports.
“Our primary focus is the safety of the community and our workforce,” a spokesperson said in a statement to NBC Chicago. “We are utilizing available resources to quickly and effectively address the situation, including air monitoring. All appropriate agencies have been notified.”
According to Reuters, units are still being stabilized after the plant was shut down, and it could be several more days before normal service resumes.
The facility produces approximately 11 million gallons per day of gasoline and diesel fuel. It distributes fuel throughout the U.S., according to its website.
The outages are also raising questions of whether there will be impacts on regional gas prices, according to Patrick De Haan of GasBuddy.
“We’ll be watching Great Lakes spot gasoline and diesel prices today,” he said.
He also cited maintenance being done at BP’s refinery in Whiting, Indiana as putting pressure on regional gas prices, though said the switch to winter blends of fuel will help ease prices.
