Cheetah Chrome, the punk rock legend best known as the co-founder and guitarist of the iconic ’70s band Dead Boys, has died at 71.
The band, who are mourning the loss of not only their bandmate but also a “beloved friend,” confirmed the heartbreaking news on social media.
“We are incredibly sad to announce the news of the passing of our beloved friend and bandmate Cheetah Chrome. Cheetah was a true original, an architect of the punk rock movement. A one-man hurricane tearing up the musical landscape with his feral guitar riffs and manic energy. Beyond all that, Cheetah was also just a really sweet guy that loved rock-roll,” the caption reads in a post shared on Dead Boys’ official Instagram, along with a black-and-white photo of the guitarist.
Moreover, Dead Boys also expressed their “deepest condolences” to the bereaved family and friends, as well as the fans who have supported the late musician and been touched by his music.

Who is Dead Boys’ Cheetah Chrome?
Before rising to fame as one of the pioneers of the punk rock scene, Chrome began his music career by joining the proto-punk band Rocket From the Tombs in late 1974, where he served as a guitarist.
Among their significant shows in Cleveland in 1975 was a performance opening for the punk rock band Television and singer-songwriter Patti Smith, later recognized as the “Godmother of Punk.”
Unfortunately, the band had a relatively short run and disbanded later that year.
The band’s breakup paved the way for Chrome and drummer Johnny Blitz to join Stiv Bators, Jeff Magnum and Jimmy Zero in forming what became the Dead Boys.
The group moved to New York, where they released their debut album, Young, Loud and Snotty, in 1977. The album featured their classic track “Sonic Reducer,” which became their breakthrough hit and signature song.
Dead Boys eventually called it quits in 1979.
With his passion for music, Chrome pursued solo projects and performed with bands like the Stilettos, as cited by Rolling Stone.
He also formed Cheetah Chrome and the Casualties, where they performed at local shows around New York City.
After pursuing a series of solo projects and collaborations with fellow musicians, Dead Boys reunited on multiple occasions, with one of their most significant reunions was the 40th anniversary of their debut album, Young, Loud and Snotty in 2017.
According to Metal Injection, Chrome had a plan to have the band’s 50th anniversary tour in 2027.
