While heavily touring the country music circuit, Lynn said she and a fan-turned-friend were visiting backstage before one of her shows. Visibly upset and crying, the friend told Lynn that her husband was messing around on her and had even brought his new girlfriend along for the evening and sat her in the second row.
Wanting a peek for herself, Lynn peered from behind the stage curtain and got a look at the other woman, who she said was “really painted up.” She then turned to her friend and said, “Honey, she ain’t woman enough to take your man!”
Lynn took those words of encouragement back into her dressing room and scribbled out the rest of the song in about 10 minutes. That night, she performed it for the first time and dedicated it to her friend.
“Girlfriends gotta stick together,” she said, per American Songwriter.
Little did Lynn know then that spontaneous hands-off anthem would become her signature song and eighth Top 10 hit.
“I gave birth to this song, and I felt every little bit of pain in these lyrics,” she told PBS. “You know a woman likes to feel sure of a man, but there are times when things just don’t play out that way. Do I have to say more about that?”

With her new era of stardom, the music industry perked up. In 1967, Lynn made history at the inaugural Country Music Association Awards when she became the very first winner of the Female Vocalist of the Year Award.
“You Ain’t Woman Enough” came full circle in 2021, when Lynn released Still Woman Enough, her 50th and final studio album. For the album, she revisited “You Ain’t Woman Enough” with Tanya Tucker, while the title track featured modern country queens Reba McEntire and Carrie Underwood.
Now, six decades later, the song celebrates a lifetime of fearless songwriting.
