A beloved Tom Hanks movie has achieved something remarkably rare: Not one of its 176 reviews counted by Rotten Tomatoes is negative.
The movie is Toy Story 2, the 1999 Pixar sequel featuring Hanks as the voice of Woody alongside Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear.

In the movie, Woody is stolen by toy collector Al McWhiggin, voiced by Wayne Knight. While Buzz and Andy’s other toys launch a rescue mission, Woody discovers he is a valuable collectible and meets Jessie, voiced by Joan Cusack, and Stinky Pete, voiced by Kelsey Grammer.
The acclaimed sequel almost disappeared before audiences ever saw it.
A misplaced computer command accidentally deleted approximately 90% of the movie’s files, according to a recent Wall Street Journal account. Pixar then discovered that its backup system had also failed.
Supervising technical director Galyn Susman unexpectedly had another copy at home because she had been working remotely while caring for her baby. Pixar employees wrapped her computer in blankets, secured it inside a station wagon and cautiously transported it back to the studio.
That copy helped recover Woody, Buzz and thousands of production files—but Pixar still wasn’t satisfied with the movie.
The studio subsequently overhauled the story less than a year before its release, a process Pixar co-founder Ed Catmull likened to giving the film a “cinematic heart transplant.”
The gamble paid off. More than 25 years later, Toy Story 2 isn’t merely remembered as a successful follow-up. Critics currently consider it the best-reviewed sequel ever made.
Susman agrees.
“I still think Toy Story 2 is the best of the franchise,” she told the Journal.
