Alabama volleyball defeated the University of Virginia Cavaliers 3-1 in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Wednesday in the second annual ACC/SEC Showdown at the Net series.
Alabama fought hard to get the win in the first two sets over Virginia; Set 1 ended 28-26 and Set 2, 25-23. The Crimson Tide began to fall in the third set, with the Cavaliers sweeping 25-14. Alabama did not let that set back take them out of the game, and had a blazing start in the fourth set and took it 25-16, closing out a 3-1 Alabama win.
“What we’re learning about the identity of our team is that we’re pretty relentless,” said head coach Rashinda Reed.
During Wednesday’s match, three players finished with double-digit kills, with Kaleigh Palmer leading with a season-high of 15, marking the 500th kill of her career.
“The team is looking at Kaleigh Palmer as a leader and she’s looking at herself as an offensive threat in different ways,” said Reed. “In the beginning of her career, she would just go up and bang but now she’s trying to diversify how she is an offensive threat.”
The team matched its season high of nine aces, led by Laney Hennessee achieving three during the match against the Cavaliers.
The Crimson Tide now has wins in both of their ACC/SEC Showdown at the Net matchups after beating Wake Forest in five sets during last year’s inaugural incarnation of the event on Sept. 10.
“As a team, we’re just going to work on the things that have been exposed against all these tough teams. We’re going to rest a bit too but ultimately there’s just different aspects of the game that we’re going to focus in on.”
The Alabama Crimson Tide will host Alcorn State in Tuscaloosa next Wednesday at 6 p.m. CT. The matchup can be streamed on ESPN.
